Buck Owens almost single-handedly created the fabled Bakersfield sound that made such singers as Merle Haggard and Dwight Yoakam famous. And it's pure Bakersfield Buck through most of this record, with its borderline maudlin tunes about absent daddies, bulging families with a christmas shopping list that threatens to put them in the poor house, and moralistic songs such as "It's Not What You Give." Ordinarily these sentiments would drive many a sane and good-hearted person from the room. But in the hands of Owens and his Buckaroos, whether they're doing "A Very Merry Christmas" or the record's timeless highlight, "Merry Christmas from Our House to Yours," it's practically required listening, and with ample charm and country-rock satisfaction.
